Costa Rica Street Style

December 29, 2015

costa rica street style jumpsuitJumpsuit: Ella Moss (Kona print sold out, other prints available here) // Shoes: Michael Antonio (sold out, similar) // Bag: Rebecca Minkoff // Sunglasses: Burberry // Necklace: Topshop (sold out, similar)

Many of you know I recently traveled to Costa Rica. You can read my trip highlights here! For most of the trip we were traveling through the rainforests and volcanos, and we did not get to a big city until the end of our trip. We spent two nights in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Like most urban centers, it has the restaurants, nightlife, museums/theaters, and other attractions. It is a vibrant city with beautiful historic buildings and architecture. I was excited to explore the downtown area in my Ella Moss jumpsuit. I had purchased this a few months ago but had never worn it. The fabric is soft and lightweight–perfect for 80 degrees weather–and I love that it has pockets. This Kona print I picked out is fun and easy to pair with different accessories and shoes. I can’t wait to wear this more next summer!

While searching for this jumpsuit online to see if it’s still available to purchase, I came across with pictures of Selena Gomez wearing the same Ella Moss jumpsuit! Who wore it better?? 🙂

Cranberry White Chocolate Cookies

December 25, 2015

cranberry white chocolate cookie

Happy holidays everyone! I hope you’re able to take some time off to spend with friends and family. I am on winter break from school, and my husband and I are spending the holidays with my in-laws. Yesterday I baked cranberry white chocolate cookies, which turned out wonderful, so I want to share this recipe with you! It’s super easy and I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

IMG_4252In a medium sized bowl, mix together with a wooden spoon or spatula these dry ingredients: flour, old fashioned oats, baking soda, salt and minced orange peel. Set aside.

IMG_4234In a large bowl, add butter, white sugar and brown sugar.

IMG_4243Mix well until smooth.

IMG_4250In the same large bowl, add eggs, vanilla extract, and milk. Mix well.
Next, add the flour/oat mixture (from the medium sized bowl) and stir to combine.

IMG_4258Add cranberries and white chocolate. Walnuts optional. I made two batches, one with walnuts and one without. Continue Reading…

Breathtaking Costa Rica

December 21, 2015

I just got back from a wonderful trip to Costa Rica. What a beautiful country! I am excited to share some highlights and pictures from my trip! (Photo credit: Spencer Liu)

Tamarindo: Day 1-2

We flew into Liberia Airport and took a taxi to Tamarindo, a town in the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It has a lovely beach and is a great place for surfing. We spent the two days exploring and relaxing on the beach. The sunset was beautiful, but my favorite part was walking on the beach late at night. The beach was completely dark so it took a while for my eyes to adjust, but then I was able to see thousands of stars. I cannot remember the last time I looked up at the sky searching for stars!

Arenal/La Fortuna: Day 3-5

We hired a driver to get to Arenal/La Fortuna. My advice to anyone traveling long distances in Costa Rica is to book a driver/shuttle/van/bus. Do NOT try to drive around on your own because the roads are very hard to drive on! The ride was so bumpy that I logged over 7k steps on my Fitbit while sitting!

The resort we stayed at was very nice! It had about 20 small houses/units, and a couple swimming pools and hot springs. Arenal was my favorite stop of the entire trip. I went paddle boarding for the first time. I was scared because I don’t know how to swim, but having a life jacket on helped. The scariest part was jumping off the boat when we were in the middle of Lake Arenal. It was difficult getting up on the paddle board in the beginning, but after doing it once it was a lot easier. I had a blast paddle boarding around the lake and I cannot wait to go paddle boarding again. We also visited Arenal Volcano, which was a very easy walk/hike to the outer edge, relaxed at the Baldi Hot Springs, and went on a safari rafting trip. We saw many species of birds, monkeys, cows, and beautiful trees/plants.

November Discoveries & Recent Sephora Haul

December 10, 2015

The last two weeks have been crazy busy! Right after Thanksgiving holiday I had to prepare for final presentations and papers. I just submitted my last paper so I am all done with Fall Quarter! Today I am on my way to Costa Rica! I’ll be in Costa Rica for almost 9 days with a couple classmates from grad school and will be posting lots of pictures on Instagram so follow me @ditchtheheels !

For those new to my blog, every month I talk about new product discoveries instead of monthly favorites. It’s because my favorites do not change often, and this forces me to try new products. I try to use the products for the entire month so that I’m able to provide a fair review. Here are the new products I tried the month of November!

HOURGLASS Veil Mineral Primer
Many YouTubers rave about this product so I finally purchased the small size that’s .33oz. After one month of use, I am almost out of product, which is really upsetting since this is very expensive. I don’t like the runny formula and my face gets shiny after just a couple of hours, so I won’t be repurchasing this item.

Julep Skip the Brush Creme-to-Powder Blush Stick – Shade Dessert Rose
During the first look, I did not think the color will look good on me, but I am LOVING this! It is a beautiful shimmery dusty rose color and blends in very easily. This is the first time I’ve used a crayon blush and I love how easy it is to blend with the tip of my fingers.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm – Shade Super Strawberry
A couple posts back I raved about the Burts Bees Lip Crayon, so it surprised me to find something even better. The main difference between the two is that the Clinique chubby sticks are more pigmented, so I don’t have to apply as much to get some colors. The Burts Bees lip crayon is a great moisturizer, but the colors are very faint. Some people may prefer that since it gives a very natural look.

Kevyn Aucoin “The Essential” Mascara
I received the sample size in a recent Glossybox. It definitely gets the job done, but is it worth spending $32 for the full size? No… I’ve tried a lot of mascara, and I think the drugstore mascaras are great. The only non-drugstore mascara I’ll spend money on is the Tarte Lights Camera Lashes!

Soyoung Eyeshadow Stick – Shade #2 Sepia
Absolutely gorgeous!! This eyeshadow stick is a rose gold shade, is creamy and easy to apply, and lasts all day. The golden/rose tint makes it look like I have blended several colors together, but really it’s just one color because I am that lazy!

Real Techniques Blush Brush and Angled Liner Brush
I love the Bold Metals line because the brushes are beautiful. These are very affordable, yet are also quality brushes and pick up a lot of products. I would highly recommend the Real Techniques brushes if you’re new to makeup and don’t have a lot of money to spend on brushes.

sephora haul november

I had a big Sephora haul a couple weeks ago because everything was 20% off! I did purchase many items, but I really only shop at Sephora twice a year when they have the big sales. In my recent post “How to Save Money on Beauty Products,” I talked about the wish list that I update regularly for the annual Sephora sales. My post has many tips on saving money on beauty products, so I refrain from purchasing anything at full retail price! I use the sales to stock up on old favorites and to try out new items that are too expensive at full price. Here’s a list of items I purchased during this sale (I will be reviewing some of these in future posts):

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15 // Tarte BB Tinted Treatment Primer SPF 30 // beautyblender // BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Glow On The Go // stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner // Bobbi Brown Lip Balm // Make Up For Ever Mattifying Primer // Tatcha Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder // Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Vitamin C Collagen Booster // Clinique All About Eyes Rich // Peter Thomas Roth Acne Clear Invisible Dots // Diamancel Diamond File

If you went to the Sephora sale last month, let me know what you picked up!

December 2015 Stitch Fix

December 7, 2015

stitch fix december 2015

I recently received my December Stitch Fix. This was my fix #9 from the company. For those who have never heard of Stitch Fix, it is a personal styling service. You fill out a questionnaire about your style, size and price point, and a stylist will send you a box of items. You pay a $20 styling fee, but that is credited back if you keep at least one item. You pay only what you decide to keep. If you decide to keep all the items, you will receive a 25% off the entire purchase. Here is my review of this month’s box and my decisions:

1. Market & Spruce Fierro Elbow Patch Crew Neck Sweater $58
This sweater is 20% wool and 80% polyester, hand wash only. Although it feels soft and the pink elbow is cute, I don’t think it is anything special and I could find a sweater I like more at this price.
Decision: Return

2. Staccato Raelene Striped Draped Front Cardigan $48
I actually love this–its super soft, I love the stitched details and draping, the buttoned sleeves make the length adjustable, and the price is reasonable. However, I am very picky about high maintenance clothing. The washing instruction says hand wash cold and do not dry clean. I usually wash my clothes after each wear so I avoid clothing that’s hand wash only.
Decision: Return

3. Skies are Blue Asa Blazer $68
My friend, Tracy, who photographed these outfits love this blazer, but we both agreed the quality is VERY low. There are lots of ways to style this, but I’ve seen cuter blazers at cheaper prices and higher quality. Far away it looks fine, but up close it just doesn’t look as polished. The fit is also loose, and I prefer a more fitted look.
Decision: Return

4. Gilli Gary Dress $54
This one-piece dress is the perfect fit and I love the flared bottom. It’s casual yet I can also dress it up. I love that it doesn’t wrinkle and I don’t have any dresses in the black/white color combo yet! Finally a keeper!
Decision: Keep

5. Zad Malia Circle Hoop Layer Necklace $28
No close-ups available of this necklace but I am wearing it with outfit #2 and #3 above. It is a layered necklace with one hoop on each layer. I have a few gold layered necklaces already.
Decision: Return

So for December, I am keeping one item. With the $20 styling credit, I paid another $34 for the black and white dress. I am packing this for my vacation in a few days and cannot wait to wear it! Let me know what you guys think of this month’s fix!
